PARTNER

I once said that our fates are intertwined, and I meant it. Our bond is complicated, but it's strong. If I am being entirely honest with myself, they are the one connection I've still allowed myself to have to my old world.

It feels like sometimes we can't have any conversation without it turning into a fight. I don't think either of us is blameless in that, and in many ways it's simply a quirk of Trench that we are constantly divided. They learned of what I did to our world... to 'UNDERTALE', and they still insist on offering me forgiveness that I never asked for. I think in many ways they take responsibility for me being the way that I am. I understand why. I took responsibility for Flowey being the way he is for a long time. But I don't think they understand that this is what I chose. I could have allowed things to go back, to chase after that empty happy ending, but I chose to end it, and to ascend to my rightful place.

I think our partnership might be actively making me weaker. But... I am free to make my own decisions. And no matter how much we fight, they are important to me.

A sentimental old woman. She is under the impression that she knows me as a result of a previous iteration of me living in Deerington, and despite her claims to be avoiding making assumptions, she seems to be running on more than a few that no longer apply to me. Having said that, it's almost comical the sheer amount that they appear to have kept from her. I haven't decided if I'm going to be more forthcoming or not, but she's generally quite cautious none the less. I'd be lying if I said I didn't appreciate that someone seems to care, even if it's only due to misplaced sentimentality toward a lost child. We'll see if either of us is worth the effort.

She seems to have similar abilities to Frisk and I. This, of course, makes her a dangerous threat to our longterm stability here, because it means we have to maneuver around her as well while turning back time. Still, I would be lying if I said I didn't think she was entertaining. It's nice, frankly, to have someone who understands what it's like to live like this and not wish to become reacquainted with how we used to be before time left it's mark. Not to mention, she could potentially prove to be quite an ally. She's a peer, if not a kindred spirit.

PROPHET

A prophet of sorts who put forward a call to arms against a world destroying leviathan he saw in his dreams. He reached out to me specifically because I featured in the dream, and he believed I was at risk. The irony isn't lost on me. Still, despite his misgivings with the concept, he's not bad at playing the role of a leader or a hero. He's... interesting to watch. Like just about everyone here he lowered his guard around me due to me being a child, and I managed to get him to eat some mind altering chocolate. Still, he managed to circumvent my commands... He could be a useful ally or piece in the future, or a powerful threat. Despite myself, I hope for the former.

WITCH

A woman I met in a hotel who similarly wears a mask to hide her true personality. She keeps it on the downlow, but she despises losing and seems to specialize in illusions that toe the line between magic and tricks. I don't fully understand a lot about her, but there is a... familiar undercurrent to the way she thinks. I know a considerable amount of her secrets that she has trusted me with, and I don't know why. I also don't know why I confessed my own crimes to prove a point. Let's hope for both of our sakes that it wasn't a mistake.

A mage I met during the memory rituals that were going up the month I arrived. Hers brought me to a battlefield, where I asked a number of questions as we watched it unfold. It seems she came from a large scale war. In her world existed an individual with a power quite similar to mine, which interested me but ultimately doesn't help me much. She also owns a bakery, oddly enough. The sweets are quite good. She seems to have a mind for experimentation and strategy over melodramatic sentimentality, I appreciate that about her.

I did, anyway. She died overspending her power in the battle against the leviathan. She hasn't come back. It seemed her return to war ended poorly for her. I could have done more, but I was weak. It only hurts if you let it.

Here's hoping death proves more peaceful for her than it did for me.

PRINCESS TUTU

Yet another self sacrificing fool, jumping in front of the blades of demons to soothe the pain in their heart. She's kind, cute, and endlessly empathetic. It's almost annoying. She needs to learn that showing compassion to everyone except for herself isn't heroic, it's just... self-centered hypocrisy disguised as charity.

...I have a certain degree of fondness for her, however. She is fun to be around. And even more fun to tease. In another life, when I was a kid and not a demon in my own right, we might have even been 'friends'. She faintly reminds me of a friend I once had, all those lifetimes ago, one of the many who had ceased to exist by the time Frisk fell down. They both had a skittish warmth to them.

She told me about her curse. Is it brainless sentimentality that makes me want to help her?

Real Knife - A dagger christened by the execution of the entire Underground, and given unimaginable destructive power. Basically it’s a really powerful glowy red dagger.
The Locket - A locket in the shape of a heart with a small engraving saying “best friends forever”. Sometimes it glows and pulses with red energy. It serves as the most powerful piece of armour in the entirety of the underground, increasing Chara’s defence stat by 99, which means that attacks directed at Chara themselves will be weakened.

Unreality, suicide, poison, harm to children, existentialism, nihilism, self-harm, apocalyptic themes.

Character Background

• History: Wiki! (I imagine it goes without saying, but my characterization subscribes to the “Chara as the Narrator across all routes” theory mentioned on their wiki page.)
• Core Relationships:

Asriel: Asriel and Chara’s relationship is complicated. When Chara fell into the Underground, Asriel found them and helped them get to the safety of his parents home and care. Over time, the two became the best of friends, who were completely inseparable. Asriel and Chara had both lived rather isolated childhoods before meeting, though Chara’s was considerably more unhappy. This made Asriel very impressionable, and while Chara always tried to act in his best interests, their own desperation for some grand destiny lead them to manipulate him and give him a whole host of issues that only festered when he became Flowey and lost his soul. They hatched a plan to free the underground that would involve the mass murder of six different humans, and Asriel stood up to Chara at the last minute after feeling the depth of Chara’s contempt for humanity. Asriel, as Flowey, came to regret that resistance, but after regaining his soul he stood by it.

Chara struggles to forgive him for it, as it rendered both their sacrifices meaningless, and foiled this plan that they had both, in Chara’s mind, agreed to completely willingly.

Frisk: Frisk became Chara’s only true companion in the Underground after the latter died. They are often heard making snarky jokes commentating on Frisk’s actions as they make their way around the Underground. Despite Chara’s contempt for humanity, we never see any proof that they include Frisk in this, as they seem to fight to the best of their ability to keep Frisk alive and see them succeed in every route.

In a lot of ways, Chara sees Frisk as a kindred spirit, for better or worse, and while at the start of the game they seem to regard Frisk with wary suspicion, they perform their role as Frisk’s guide to the best of their abilities.

Toriel: Chara greatly admires Toriel. It’s implied through a few minor details in the game that Asgore was Asriel’s favourite of the Dreemurr parents, while Toriel was Chara’s. Key among these is the fact that Chara seems to borrow a lot of Toriel’s speech patterns in an effort to come across as elegant and mature. Beyond that, Toriel shows a similar line of thinking regarding how she would go about breaking down the barrier separating monsters from the human world, citing what was Chara’s exact plan as a better alternative to Asgore’s solution of waiting for humans to fall down and killing them one by one until he had enough to break the barrier.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:

Chara is smart. They indicate an uncanny level of education and cunning at multiple points in canon, but an easy indicator is that Chara is the one constantly providing guidance and advice both to the player and to Frisk. They do this because they’re very familiar with the Underground as they lived there for a considerably long time. Beyond that, they make a lot of obscure literary references in their narration, indicating that they’re quite well-read.

Chara was compassionate. Before the No Mercy route, and gaining the maximum amount of LOVE possible in the game, they genuinely only desired to help the people of the Underground, and to redeem humanity by freeing everyone. They struggle with this when they’re alive and their plan to save everyone involves a murder suicide and a plan to mass murder six uninvolved people, believing that even though this is an evil act, the fact that it will save so many people more than balances that out. They manage to figure out a right way to embrace that heroic role in the pacifist route, when they help talk Asriel down from unmaking reality, something they would later do themselves, but they lost that clarity once they gained LOVE and gained massively in their capacity to hurt other people, seeing their lives as toys to be discarded.

Chara cares about justice. They show a great admiration and respect for characters who try their best to fight for what they believe in, even in the No Mercy arc when their empathy is at its lowest they still make it clear that they believe Undyne is the coolest heroine ever, and despite being on Frisk and the player’s side, they cheer her on. Another moment that this is shown is when they get angry at Frisk for taking all the candy from a communal bowl, expressing that taking too much of what was being given as an act of generosity is a disgusting betrayal of good will.
(2+) Negative Experiences:

Chara is manipulative. There’s numerous parts in the narration that imply that they use humour as a way to shield the uglier aspects of their trauma from others, and to make themselves appear unflappable. This is the… more self sacrificing and less malicious side of it. But they also very much manipulated Asriel into going along with their plan, knowing he wouldn’t be comfortable with it, because they believed that at the end he would understand that it was worth it once he’d seen the surface world the way that they did. Even after the fact, the only one who knows how premeditated the whole affair was is Flowey, who starts emulating their behaviour in a far more twisted direction.

Chara is violent. Although their personality changes depending on which route they’re on, and they show no real inclination toward wanting to hurt monsters, their solution to the barrier problem was to murder six people, something they felt was justified as humanity was the reason that the monsters were sealed underground anyway. Beyond that, when they are at their worst and pumped full of LOVE, they kill Asgore without a second thought. And then, when Flowey appears afterward and starts pleading and begging for his life, they show no signs of halting their onslaught until Flowey wears Asriel’s face and begs with Asriel’s voice. This angers them to the point that they hack Flowey to pieces, showing a level of excessive violence that they never showed any of their previous enemies. This is because they view Asriel as a traitor, and Flowey as a hollow replacement.

Chara is deeply cynical. Even from the start, when they were presumably just a messed up child, Asriel tells us that Chara showed a deep disdain for humanity as a whole. Based on some of the things they say, it can also be inferred that they hold themselves responsible for what they consider the sins of humanity, such as sealing monsters underground. That disdain comes from their sense of justice, but after they started searching for their purpose by killing, they began to see the world as nothing more than a hollow playground where the outcome never really mattered. On a meta-sense, they began to see the people they were killing as NPCs. While other characters like Sans and Flowey eventually come to combat this nihilism, Chara succumbs to it, and believes that the only thing left to do is to destroy the world rather than let it continue it’s meaningless existence.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers: Chara’s canonical abilities largely lie in helping Frisk persist after death, though when they were alive this was also a power that they could use for themselves. Essentially, if they die, so long as they have enough willpower, they’ll be brought back to life at an earlier point in time.
• Blood Type: Dark Blood.
• Omen: Azrael, a small black goat, with golden flowers wrapped around his horns.
• Blessed Day: 13th of June, the day they died.
• Patron Pthumerian: Remina.
• Blood Power Manifestation:

Erosion: Chara can spill their blood on something and cause it to experience the physical effects of an amount of time anywhere between a week and an aeon. So if used on a wooden house, it will basically timelapse it ‘till it’s dust, and if used on a person, they’ll feel themselves start to rapidly age. This can, however, be healed or repaired.

Shortcut: Chara can use their enhanced understanding of the limits of reality to more or less teleport by turning something into a shortcut. They can very briefly share this for a disorientating moment by dragging them along with them as they go through the “shortcut”.

Branching Paths: Chara can shed blood on the locket they have on them at all times, and temporarily manifest a different version of themselves grown completely out of blood. Problem is, they’re not always aligned. Sometimes the alternate version will be too violent to be tamed, sometimes they’ll be too good and will run away from Chara screaming, sometimes they’ll want to be the “Real Chara”. But most of the time, they’ll just calmly go about their purpose as a servant under Chara’s will.

ERASE: When mustering up all their power, Chara can use their knife to cut something out of reality entirely. It can still be dragged back by them, but for a brief moment whatever they strike at will be completely and utterly erased, causing some to question if the target ever actually existed at all. This can 1. be reversed 2. has to be something they do fully intentionally 3. would only be done with permission and pre-plotting, obviously.

Golden Flowers: This is a passive ability, but basically if Chara stays in one spot too long, buttercups will start to sprout from whatever surface is available. They’ll grow like regular plants but they’re essentially like week-old footprints.
